Here’s a quick guide to what size tank you may need:
- 100 lb./25 Gallon: Good for small, occasional use like cooking, grills, or portable heaters.
- 120 Gallon: Ideal for 1-2 appliances, such as a water heater, fireplace, or space heater.
- 250 Gallon: Suitable for homes using 3 or more appliances (for example, dryer, stove, water heater) but not main heating.
- 500 Gallon: The standard size for whole-home heating, cooking, and hot water, recommended for 2,000-2,500 sq. ft. homes.
- 1,000 Gallon: Best for large homes (4,500-plus sq. ft.) with high usage, such as heating a pool or running a generator.
Important Things to Know about Propane Tanks:
- 80% Rule: Propane tanks are only filled to 80% capacity for safety, meaning a 500-gallon tank actually holds about 400 gallons of usable fuel.
- Installation Space: Aboveground tanks need a level, solid base, while underground tanks require space for burial.
